Witch's cauldron: a Halloween potion your friend stirs with a finger

The witch's cauldron is an iron pot bubbling on a stone hearth in a purple, moonlit garden. Your friend draws circles inside it with a finger, and every quarter turn something small drops in: a gold star, a tiny pumpkin, a friendly eyeball, a piece of candy corn or a spotted mushroom. Each full turn shifts the colour of the brew. After the third, the pot boils over and their name rises in the steam. It is more playful than scary, and it gives them something to do with their hands.

It suits the friend you always spend Halloween with, a cousin who missed the costume party, or a coworker who likes a little spook. Setting it up takes a minute: type their name and yours, pick the potion colour and the surprise, and add a note if you like. Send the link on WhatsApp or paste it anywhere; it opens in their phone browser with nothing to install.

What does the recipient experience?

  1. They see a "Look in the cauldron" button. Sound helps here: an owl, the bubbling pot and a creaking gate set the mood.
  2. The camera moves into the garden, their name is spelled out on screen and bats flutter across the sky.
  3. They stir by drawing three circles inside the cauldron with a finger (or the mouse on a computer). Ingredients splash in and the potion changes colour with every turn. If drawing circles is awkward, holding the "Hold to let the ladle stir" button does the stirring.
  4. The potion boils over in a burst of sparks, and "Happy Halloween" appears in the steam along with their name.
  5. Then comes the surprise you picked: either a cute ghost pops out of the potion and shouts "Boo!" (they can tap it afterwards), or candy sprays out of the cauldron across the garden.
  6. Finally your message card opens, and they can reply with 🧪 🎃 👻 🦇 or ❤️ to say thanks.

What can you choose?

You enter their name and yours and can add a personal message, or start from one of the suggested lines. You choose the final potion colour: green, purple or orange. While they stir, the brew starts murky and passes through two other colours before landing on yours. For the surprise you choose trick (a ghost says "Boo!") or treat (a shower of candy).

When to send it

This one is made for Halloween on October 31. Send it on the evening itself, before a party, while the kids are out trick-or-treating, or to someone far away who would enjoy a small seasonal hello. If the person does not like being startled, go with the candy surprise. Stirring works best on a touchscreen, but a mouse is fine, and the hold button gets them through without drawing at all.

Common questions

What if they can't get the stirring to work?

The "Hold to let the ladle stir" button at the bottom turns the ladle for them while they hold it. If nothing happens for a few seconds, a hint also appears on screen.

Do I choose the colour the potion ends up?

Yes. You pick green, purple or orange, and the in-between colours change to match, so the brew goes through a different sequence each time.

Is the ghost too scary for kids?

It is a round, friendly ghost that throws up its arms, says "Boo!" and then floats beside the cauldron. If you would rather skip it, choose the treat surprise instead.
