Chalkboard: a thank-you hidden under the chalk

Chalkboard is a short thank-you set in a primary school classroom. Morning light falls on apricot-patterned wallpaper, alphabet cards, paper bunting, children's drawings, and an apple and a vase of tulips on the teacher's desk. The board still holds a half-erased maths lesson: an equation, fractions, a right triangle and “Homework: p. 42”. As the teacher wipes it with a finger, chalk dust drifts down and “Thank you” shows through. Then the chalk writes their name on its own and draws a heart beside it.

It was made with primary and early-years teachers in mind, and for parents who want to thank their child's teacher. Write the name the way your class says it, such as “Ms. Carter”, and it goes on the board exactly as typed. Send the link by message and it opens in the teacher's browser. For secondary school teachers or lecturers, “High school” runs the same moment in a more grown-up classroom.

What does the recipient experience?

  1. The opening says the sender wants to celebrate Teachers' Day with you. Turn the sound on and tap “Let's begin”.
  2. Your name appears and the camera moves into the classroom, up to the board.
  3. Run your finger over the board to wipe it. The eraser follows you, chalk dust falls and “Thank you” starts to show underneath.
  4. Once enough is cleared, the leftover dust lifts and sparkles, the chalk writes your name and draws a heart, the school bell rings and sunlight fills the room.
  5. The sender's message opens on a card. Pick an emoji, from an apple to a pencil, to say thanks, or watch it again.

What can you choose?

The sender picks the board colour: a classic green board or a black one. They also write the teacher's name, their own name and an optional message. In English the name is used exactly as written, so titles like “Mr.”, “Mrs.” or “Ms.” are up to you.

When to send it

Teachers' Day falls on different dates around the world: November 24 in Turkey, while UNESCO's World Teachers' Day is October 5 and many countries have their own day. The card is labelled “Teachers' Day”, so it fits any of them, and it also works as an end-of-year thank-you. Links are deleted after seven days. Wiping comes naturally on a touchscreen, and a mouse works too.

Common questions

How is the teacher's name written on the board?

Exactly as you type it in English, so “Mrs. Lee” or “Mr. Daniel” appears as is. On Turkish cards the word for “teacher” is added after the name.

What's the difference between Chalkboard and High school?

The flow is the same; the classroom differs. Chalkboard is a bright primary classroom with a simple maths lesson, while High school is a calmer room with calculus and science on the board.

Do I have to wipe the whole board?

No. About halfway through, the “A little more…” nudge appears; wipe a bit more and the celebration starts on its own.

What should I write in a card for my teacher?

Keep it short and specific: name one thing they taught you or your child, then say thank you. While making the card you can also pick one of the suggested messages and adjust it.
