Cap Toss: throw your cap in the college courtyard

Cap Toss brings a graduation's best-loved moment to the phone. The setting is a sunny school courtyard: lawn, a stone path down the middle, a stone arcade with five arches and three steps in front, and round trees. A mortarboard with a gold tassel waits at the bottom of the screen. When they swipe it up quickly, the cap spins into the air, the rest of the class's caps fly up too, paper confetti scatters and the crowd cheers and claps. As the caps come down, a scroll tied with ribbon appears; the ribbon slips off, the paper unrolls and there is their name on the diploma.

Send it to anyone finishing university, high school or a master's degree: a daughter, a son, a niece, a student or a friend. There is also a separate option for someone who has just got into the school they wanted. It works well if you can't make it to the ceremony, or as an evening message once the day is over. You choose the reason, the cap colour and your message, then share the link.

What does the recipient experience?

  1. The first screen says the sender 'is waiting for you at the graduation ceremony'; they turn the sound on and tap 'Step outside'.
  2. The camera moves into the courtyard and their name appears under 'Today is your day' to the sound of applause.
  3. 'Toss your cap into the air!' appears. They swipe up quickly from the cap; if the swipe is too slow, they're told to go a little faster. There's also a 'Toss' button.
  4. The cap spins upwards, the other caps fly up with it, paper confetti falls and the crowd applauds.
  5. As the cap lands, a diploma scroll appears: the ribbon unties, the paper rolls open and shows 'DIPLOMA', their name, the line 'For your hard work and determination' and a gold seal, while a short graduation march we composed plays.
  6. After 'Congratulations, graduate' your message opens, and they can reply with 🎓, 🎉, 👏, 🥹 or ❤️.

What can you choose?

There are two settings. The first is the reason: graduation or getting into a school. With the admission option the headings become 'You got in' and 'You did it', and the scroll reads 'CONGRATULATIONS' with 'Good luck at your new school' instead of 'DIPLOMA'. The second is the cap colour: black, navy or burgundy. All the caps in the courtyard fly in the same colour, just like a class in matching caps.

When to send it

For admissions and graduations: ceremonies at the end of the school year, the day exam or admission results come out, or after a master's or PhD defence. It needs no microphone or motion access, only a swipe. With the applause, cheering and march it is much livelier with sound, so it's worth telling them to turn it on.

Common questions

What if they can't toss the cap?

If the swipe is too slow, the screen asks them to swipe a little faster. If swiping is awkward, the 'Toss' button throws the cap just the same.

What does the diploma say?

For a graduation it shows 'DIPLOMA', their name and 'For your hard work and determination'; for an admission it shows 'CONGRATULATIONS', their name and 'Good luck at your new school'. A gold seal sits at the bottom.

Can I send it to someone who just got into a school?

Yes. Set the reason to admission when you make it, and the welcome, the scroll text and the default message are all written for a new school. The cap toss itself stays the same.
