Key to the door: bring the key to the lock, turn it and step inside
Key to the door recreates one of the best moments of moving house: opening your new front door for the first time. It's early evening outside a house with a painted door, warm wall lamps and a stone step. A brass key with a ribbon tied to its ring floats at the bottom of the screen. The recipient drags it to the lock, where it slides into the keyhole, then turns it to the right until the lock clicks twice. The door creaks inward and warm light spills from a small living room with a sofa, lamp, frames and a plant. The doormat reads 'Welcome home'.
Send it to a friend who has just moved, a sibling who bought their first place, or someone finally leaving a shared flat for their own. The text speaks to one person ('This home is yours'), but for a couple moving in together you can put both names in the name field. It also makes a nice first congratulation before you show up with a housewarming gift. Share the link by WhatsApp or by copying it; the recipient opens it in their phone's browser with nothing to install.
What does the recipient experience?
- The screen says the sender 'sent you a key. The door is waiting for you.' The recipient turns the sound on and taps 'Take the key', and the key jingles.
- Their name appears under 'This home is yours', with the line 'A new door, a new story'.
- The key floats at the bottom of the screen. The recipient holds it with a finger (or the mouse) and drags it to the lock; once it's close, it slides into the keyhole by itself. An 'Insert the key' button works too.
- The camera moves in on the lock. The recipient slides a finger to the right to turn the key, or taps 'Turn', and the lock opens with two clicks.
- The door swings inward, the room lights up, specks of light drift through the air, 'Welcome home' appears on the doormat and a short tune written for this template plays. Then the sender's message opens on a card, and the recipient can send an emoji back with 'Say thanks'.
What can you choose?
The sender enters both names and an optional message and chooses the door colour: blue, green, red or yellow. The room behind the door, the key and the doormat stay the same. If the message is left empty, a ready-made line beginning 'Congratulations on your new home!' is shown, and message suggestions are available while creating it.
When to send it
Key to the door is made for new homes: send it on moving day, when the keys are handed over, or when the place is ready for its first guests. The same occasion also offers the Bouquet and the Flower wreath if you'd rather send flowers. Since both dragging and turning have buttons, someone who isn't comfortable with touch gestures can still open the door easily.
Common questions
Do I need to place the key exactly on the keyhole?
No. Bring it near the lock and it slides in by itself. If you'd rather not drag at all, the 'Insert the key' button does the same.
What's behind the door?
A small, lit living room with a sofa, a floor lamp, a rug, framed pictures and a potted plant. The doormat at the threshold says 'Welcome home'.
Can I add a photo of the actual house?
No, the scene is the same front door in every card. What you can change is the door colour, the names and the message.
