Kite: a Father's Day thank-you written across the sky

Kite borrows from a memory plenty of us share: a windy afternoon on a hill with Dad and a kite that wouldn't stay up. The scene is a grassy hilltop in warm late-day light, a kite fluttering on the grass. This time he holds the string. Each downward swipe turns the reel, tightens the line and lifts the kite another level. On the sixth pull it reaches the top, long ribbons unfurl from its tail and the screen reads “You always lifted me higher.” Then “Thank you for everything” and his name appear in the sky.

It suits anyone who finds a thank-you easier to show than to say. Send it to your dad, your grandad or someone who has been a father figure to you. The link goes by WhatsApp or text and opens in his phone's browser, no app needed. You can type “Dad” or whatever you call him in the name field; that's what the sky will show.

Sample: for Dad, from Jamie · Open full screen

What does the recipient experience?

  1. The opening says the sender brought you a kite and the wind is perfect for flying. Turn the sound on and tap “Climb the hill”.
  2. Your name appears, then you're asked to pull the string by swiping down the screen. Each pull lifts the kite, the wind picks up and the camera tilts to follow it skyward.
  3. If swiping is awkward, there's a “Hold to reel in” button; keep it pressed and the line winds itself.
  4. After six pulls the kite is as high as it goes, ribbons stream from its tail and the line “You always lifted me higher.” appears.
  5. “THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING” and your name are written across the sky, birds fly past and a warm tune plays. The sender's message comes last, and you can reply with a thank-you emoji.

What can you choose?

The sender picks the kite's colours from four sets: red and yellow, blue and white, sunset shades, or green. The bows and ribbons follow the same set. They also enter the recipient's name, or whatever they call him, their own name and an optional message. Leave the message blank and a short default note thanks him for everything he taught you.

When to send it

Father's Day falls on the third Sunday of June in both the US and Turkey, along with many other countries. Send the link that morning or the day before, since it's deleted after seven days. The screen is labelled “Father's Day”, so the natural recipients are dads, grandads and father figures. Remind him to turn the sound on for the wind and music; the kite climbs the same way when muted.

Common questions

What if my dad can't do the swipe?

There's also a “Hold to reel in” button on screen. Keeping a finger on it is enough to send the kite up.

How many pulls does it take?

Six. Short notes after the first and third pulls tell him it caught the wind and is climbing; on the sixth it reaches the top.

Can I write “Dad” instead of his name?

Yes. Whatever you put in the recipient's name field is what appears in the sky under “Thank you for everything”.
