Seaside: write in the sand, let the next wave wash it away
Seaside looks straight down onto a beach. The top of the screen is sea, shading from turquoise shallows to deep blue; the bottom is fine sand dotted with shells and pebbles. As the recipient breathes out, a wave runs up the shore trailing foam, and as they breathe in it slides back, leaving a dark, wet band behind. Meanwhile they can trace a word, a heart or a line in the sand with a finger, and the next wave smooths it away. Writing something and letting it go is the small moment that sets this break apart.
It suits a friend whose holiday feels far away, someone who misses summer, or a person with a lot on their mind who could use a nudge to pause. You pick the length and the time of day, add a short note and send the link. It opens in their phone browser with no account or app.
What does the recipient experience?
- The opening screen says who sent the beach break and how many minutes it lasts. They tap "Start the break" and can turn on the optional "Deep sound" layer. Headphones help.
- The beach fades in from black with "Let your shoulders drop" and "Let your breath follow the waves".
- The breathing guide begins: in for 4 seconds, out for 6. The wave comes in on the out-breath and pulls back on the in-breath, and the sound swells and fades with it. Written cues appear for the first three breaths, then only the ring remains.
- Dragging a finger across the sand writes or draws; a quick tap leaves a fingerprint. The incoming wave erases it. Touches never change the breathing rhythm, and one tap on the guide button hides the ring.
- When the time is up a chime sounds: "The break is over. These minutes were yours."
- Your note appears, and they can reply with ❤️ 🥹 🌊 🙏 or 😌, or tap "Again" for another round.
What can you choose?
You set the length between 1 and 5 minutes, with 2 as the default. Three scenes set the time of day: sunset, midday and moonlight. In moonlight a path of light crosses the water and crickets replace the distant gulls. You also type their name, your name and a short note, with suggested notes to choose from.
When to send it
Any day works; it does not need an occasion. Send it at the end of summer, to someone whose trip got postponed, after a long shift, or to a friend trying to put something behind them. Writing in the sand is optional, and the break completes without a single touch. It is not therapy, just a few quiet minutes.
Common questions
How long does writing in the sand last?
Until the next wave washes over it. Since the waves follow the breathing rhythm, that is usually a matter of seconds.
Can they look around the beach?
No, the view stays fixed, looking down at the shore. Finger movements are used for drawing in the sand instead.
What does it sound like?
Waves that come and go with the breath, the hiss of foam over pebbles, wind, and a warm low pad underneath. All of it is generated in the browser.
